Mary of Peter, Paul and Mary has just died

This is turning out to be a tragic week of big name entertainers dying. Today it is Mary Travers. Mary had leukemia and had been fighting it for years. She had a bone marrow transplant in 2006 and she reported that she had never felt better. The cancer came back earlier this year. Mary was 72 years old.

Motley Crue - where are they now?

The heavy metal band of the 1980's and into the early 1990's with many tops videos on MTV and now VH1, Motley Crue, are they still around? So what are they up to? Are they still a band? I took a look and here is what I found:

Yes they are still doing tours and they have just released their 9th album. Since forming in 1981 they broke up briefly in the late 1990's and got back together around 2005. They are working on a movie called Dirt that is in the works and might be released sometime in 2011.

Social networking for music lovers

Unknown

You know all about social networking. Myspace and Facebook taught you all about that. Now there is a social network that is all about music. A place where the actual artists, producers and fans can all come together.

The place is Kerchoonz and you can download music for free without worrying about stealing it since the artist gets their royalties straight from Kerchoonz.

I just became a member (membership is free) and checked out some of the videos. There is one on there called the "Mad Drummer" which is a gorilla playing the drums to a well known song. The videos are not your typical Youtube type fare but are professionally done by the artists themselves.

If you are a music download fanatic then you'll love this site. Don't worry about finding your way around, when you join up they put some how-to instructions in your "in box". Check it out, what have you got to lose except maybe a few hours of entertaining fun.

Patrick Henry Hughes

Did you see last night’s Extreme Makeover – Home Edition? If you did you saw one of the most musical geniuses of our time. The young, 19 year old, Patrick Henry Hughes was an inspiration to us all. This young guy can not only play a mean instrument he composes music as well. His family was featured on Extreme Home Makeover to provide him with a home that was accessible for his wheelchair. When I saw Patrick’s own personal apartment within the home I was flabbergasted. His bathroom had everything he would need to take care of himself without bothering his parents to lift him out of his wheelchair. I don’t remember seeing any vertical wheelchair lifts in the home but there might have been one to get him into their car.

Hopefully one of the major recording studios will now sign him up for a contract, hint, hint. That man deserves it.

The artist formerly known as "Prince"

I wonder how you really pronounce his name? Since he changed his name to a symbol I am not sure. His birth name is Prince Rogers Nelson. But that is all old news. In May 2000 he went back to using his birth name of Prince. Funny how the rest of the planet did not catch on to it. Did you know that Prince is a vegan and has been voted the sexiest vegan on the planet by PETA?

His most well known song by far is "Little Red Corvette" and I found a funny story related to the song and how one person actually thought it was about a car.

Last I heard is that he was in Prague making a video for his latest song. He is still actively turning out songs and albums. He is scheduled to make an appearance at the Grammy's in a few days.

The piano players

When you think of singers that play the piano, who do you think of? Here is my short list:
  • Elton John
  • Stevie Wonder
  • Avril Lavigne
  • Billy Joel

Who can you think of?

Led Zeppelin back in the news

After their reunion concert in London last month, there have been rumors flying all over the place that they will be touring soon with Jason Bonham keeping his place as the drummer. They have publicly announced that they would love to do the occasional concert together but have tired of the touring scene. A really good article about the history of Led Zeppelin including some dirt on them can be found here.

A legend passes - Dan Fogelberg

Dan Fogelberg died today at the age of 56. The cause was cancer. His music will live on. He had many hits including "The Leader of the Band". His official website has lots of information about his life including all his music which you can listen to for free.

Neil Diamond on a rebound

The 66 year old singer is on the rebound with his song "Sweet Caroline". One can only wonder why it took the man 40 years to reveal who inspired him. Is it a publicity stunt to get him back in the headlines again? If it is it sure did work. His song "Sweet Caroline" and Caroline Kennedy have just hit all time highs for Internet searches across all search engines.
